Puppies that bond with their owners do so for life. Most breeds innately have it inside them to bond with their pack at a very young age. Adult dogs that are adopted by a second or third owner simply do not have the bonding power that puppies do with their owners. But you can build trust with an adopted adult dog.

The more you can bond with your dog while it is a puppy, then, the stronger the bond you two share will be. Bonding with your puppy is easy, and though it may be a lot of fun to sit back and watch your puppy do lots of cute puppy things, it can be just as fun to interact with your puppy and bond with them for life.

Ways to Bond With Your Puppy

1) Train them

Training your dog is a great way to bond with them. Training allows you to give them lots of praise and treats, as well as help your dog understand what it is that you want them to do (come when called, wait or stay, NOT to chew on your shoes, etc.)

2) Groom them

Grooming is a form of affection, and your puppy loves affection. It is also a great way to make bonding with puppy fun while ensuring their coat is clean and feels good, so that they will leave happier when you are done grooming them.

3) Be excited about things like food

When you are about to give your dog food, make it feel like an event. Get them excited about their meal and then provide it for them. Once again, this shows your dog that you are the parent (pack leader), and it also gets your dog very excited for its reward.

4) Show your dog regular attention

Talking to your dog or calling it over and petting it are great ways to make sure you and your dog increase your bond.

5) Take your dog for walks

It goes without saying how important regular walks are for your puppy. The more you and your dog get tired together, the more fun your dog will have with you every day.

6) Play fetch

Bonding with puppy can be fun too! Getting your puppy excited to be running back and forth after something that you are in control of will have your puppy looking to you any time they want to have fun.

7) Introduce to strangers while keeping them close

At some point you will need to socialize your puppy with strangers. As a puppy, it will no doubt receive love and affection from everyone it meets. And if you also stay close to them while they meet these strangers, your puppy will look to you as someone who can protect it, but it will also have a good time meeting all of the friendly new people.

As you can see, bonding with puppy can be both fun and exciting, and is an important step for turning your puppy into a well behaved and loving companion.
