Clicker Train Your
Dog Using The Latest Techniques
An
Introduction
to Clicker Training
Professional trainers
everywhere use clicker
training as the number one way to train your dog. Clicker training has
proven itself time and time again to be fast, reliable, and help your
dog learn tricks and behaviors that it will remember forever.
What
is a Clicker?
The
clicker used in clicker training is a
tiny device with a small imprint for your finger that makes a loud
click, similar to pushing down on a metal Snapple cap, except slightly
louder.
What
is Clicker
Training Used For?
Despite their intelligence,
dogs rarely
understand exactly the behavior you want from them. Other forms of
training, such as leading (when you have your dog follow the treat in
order to get the desired behavior) can be useful, but your dog is not
always learning a trick – they are often just following the treat. As a
result other forms of training are less reliable.
In addition, dogs learn by what
is known as
operant conditioning – the immediate rewarding of a treat or affection
for a desired behavior makes them wait to continue that behavior. Dogs
also have very short term memories, so the longer you want after a
click is successfully performed – even just a single second – the less
likely your dog is to learn the trick.
Clicker training is used to
teach a dog a
trick gradually. By first training your dog to the clicker, your dog
begins to associate the clicker with a reward (known as Classical
Conditioning). Also, a clicker can be used instantaneously. The exact
moment the dog performs the desired behavior, you have the opportunity
to click the clicker and your dog will feel rewarded.
How
Do You Teach
Your Dog to Associate the Clicker With a Reward
Getting your dog to understand
the clicker
is easy. Simply take one or
two days of training where all you do is
click the clicker and give your dog a treat. That’s it. Your dog will
quickly realize that once it hears the click, it means treat.
Eventually, when you start
using the clicker
to train your dog, your dog will hear the click and know it did
something good and is about to be rewarded. This cuts the time it takes
to reward your dog (since your dog does not have to run over to you
first in order to acknowledge that it is getting the reward), allowing
you to give it better training.

learn and
without a doubt the best possible way to train your dog on new tricks.
