Cherish Your Dog Like You Did Before He Developed Behavior Problems

5 Important Tips for Understanding Dog Behavior

lady with dogWhen you introduce a dog to your home, especially if you have never had a dog before, some of their behaviors can seem both odd and frustrating. Dogs are smart animals, but they exhibit behaviors that for some dog owners are irritating and possibly even destructive. Understanding dog behavior is the most important step towards training your dog effectively and being a good dog owner.

Things to Know About Dog Behavior

  • Your Dog is an Animal
People often forget that dogs are animals too. Like all animals, dogs have instincts that they often struggle to control. In fact, most dogs were bred specifically for these instincts. When your dog exhibits bad behavior, it likely was not thinking “I want to destroy these socks now.” Rather, it was suffering from a chewing instinct and took it out on the first available thing to chew.
  • Dogs Rarely Think

Similar to the last important tip, because dogs appear so smart, many people start to believe that their dogs “think” before they act. This is rarely the case. Dog’s are almost entirely behavioral creates, and the dog behaviors you see are an immediate response to a stimulus, rather than a thoughtful, calculated response that came from deliberation.

  • Dogs Have Extremely Short Memories

Dogs do have long term memories. They will remember your smell for years and years. But in general, dogs do not remember the thing they did before their current task. If your dog was licking your face, and then goes and plays with another dog in the park, it has already forgotten that it was just licking your face.

This is extremely important for understanding dog behaviordog chewing. Remember, your dog only remembers the last thing it did (or, more accurately, the behavior it is currently doing). If you come home and find that your dog has ripped apart your shoe, or pooped on your couch, it is already too late to punish it. Your dog has forgotten it did either of those things, because it is excited that you have come home. If you punish your dog, your dog is going to associate the punishment with you coming home, and not with the mistake that it made while you were gone. Rubbing your dog’s face in its mistake is only going to confuse your dog and scare it – it will not teach them a lesson.

  • Dogs Respond Best to Positive Reinforcement

Giving your dog treats and praise is always more effective for getting good dog behavior than punishment. Your dog is far more likely to understand that good behaviors get rewarded than it is bad dog behavior gets punished. If you punish your dog, chances are they will still exhibit the behavior, and simply try harder not to get caught.

  • Tired Dogs are More Well Behaved Dogs

A tired dog is far more likely to control its instincts and remember its training. Dogs with too much energy have a very hard time keeping their primal instincts in check, because they are too overwhelmed with their feelings of energy. If you want your dog to exhibit more calm and good dog behavior, you need to make sure your dog is getting good long walks and play time during the day.
