... which one is right for your dog?
The dog training collar, a must have for dog obedience training. From the choker chain, martingale collar, and harness to the halti or gentle leader. The right collar can make training easier.Choosing the right collar for your pups personality is essential. There are several dog training collars on the market today. This must have dog accessory can help make obedience training easier, if you have the right one for your pup. Obedience training starts with the right training collar. But, with all of the different types of dog training collars on the market, how do you know which one is right for your dog? Let’s review the typical collars. The choke chain or choker collar. Typically a metal chain loop that adjusts as your dog pulls or when you tug on the leash. But, did you know that they also come in nylon? The corded or nylon collar is usually used for the show ring.
The choke chain is probably the first collar that many people reach for when training their dog. It’s easy to slip on, and easy to use. The right way to slip it on to your pup is to look at the chain, it should look like the letter “P” when you’re slipping it over their head. The long tail of the chain on your left as you’re facing your dog. This collar usually works great for most medium to large breeds. You’re able to have a little more control when you’re training. If you’re dog doesn’t respond well, and continues to pull or act up, bring the chain higher up on his or her neck, right under their jawbone and behind their ears. One word of caution here… let them “self correct” their tugging or pulling since this is a very tender spot.
The prong collar. Similar to the choker chain, this one has metal prongs on the inside. Some trainers will recommend this type of device for dogs that are very, very difficult to control. Personally, I have found that a plain choke chain, placed high up on the neck works much better.
The martingale collar. Again similar to the choke chain collar, but this one is geared toward dogs with a larger neck and smaller head (think Whippet, Greyhound types). I find this a great training collar for smaller breeds like Yorkies and Shih Tzu’s.Check out the video on how the martingale collar works.
