How to Potty Train A Puppy

Puppy potty training is interesting, because it many ways it is natural for your pup – no dog wants to pee in its home unless they do not know there is another, better place available. But puppy potty training is also something that you need to do carefully, with consistency, and do not forget that there will be a few accidents down the road.

* Think about this - If you have a newborn baby, you would go to them at any time, even in the middle of the night, to see what they're crying about, wouldn't you? You would keep your eyes on them at ALL times when they're crawling around...wouldn't you? And, when you're unable to keep a watchful eye on them, you would place them in a crib or somewhere safe, right?

Your new puppy isn't much different, but it only takes a couple of weeks of this kind of attention with a pup (not years like a baby). Paying attention to little whimpers, walking in circles and some other signs are the keys to your success with house training.

Just a few short weeks of paying attention to the "signs" and your puppy potty training days (and nights) will end in success!

Crate Train First

House training begins with a crate. It is much easier to potty train once you have crate trained your puppy. Despite what it may seem, dogs, by their very nature, are clean animals. Yes, they may like to roll around in dirt on occasion, but they absolutely do not want to sleep in their own waste.

Inside a crate, there is no room to make waste, so a properly crate trained puppy will hold its waste until they have a chance to go out.

When he or she whimpers or whines, go outside for ONLY one reason, potty...no play, no games, just potty. If they go potty, its reward time...if they don't, gently, back into the crate they go. This teaches your pup that each time they cry, you think its potty time, NOT play time.

House Training Your Puppy

In order to potty train your puppy, you need to follow these simple steps:

* Outside time is ONLY potty time. No playing outside for the first couple of weeks. You can play in the house. This teaches your pup exactly what you're outside for.

* The first, best place to go to is the same spot it went to the bathroom before, but you may need to walk your puppy around a while in case it wants to find a new spot. Once it pees and poops, shower it with praise and a treat.

* Take time when you take your puppy to go to thebathroom outside, shower them with praise and a treat when they do the right thing.

* After eating, about 10 to 30 minutes, your pup will have to go.

* After playing, they'll have to go again!

* After two to three hours of being in the crate, it's potty time again.

* IMMEDIATELY when they wake up from sleeping or napping. (What's the first thing you do when you wake up? Puppy first, then it's your turn...you can hold it, they can't).

Signs:

A little whimper, or crying/whining when they're in their crate.

Walking, sniffing in circles.

Walking off, away from you in the middle of play or just about anything. They WANT to be with you, but will walk away to go potty.

A little nudge from them, possibly pawing at you...that's their way of saying "Hey...it's time to go out!"

Conclusion

Just a few short weeks of this type of attention from you can save you months (or years) of frustration...not to mention cleaning the floor way too many times.
