Puppies are fluffy and full of energy and love, and no matter how tough you are it's hard to watch a puppy play for hours and not be completely overwhelmed with affection for the little doggy. However, even as a baby, puppy training needs to occur, and if you want your puppy to grow up into a healthy and well behaved dog, you need to learn the following puppy training tips. Things To Know: You are the "Mommy" or "Daddy" (aka: alpha) Puppies need to learn at a very young age that they are and always will be looking to you for learning right from wrong. It's very hard to be firm with a puppy, but a dog that grows up knowing good manners is not only going to be better behaved, it is going to live longer as well. Puppy obedience training is essential. Puppies don’t understand English (yet). No dog of any age understands all of the words in the English language, you have to teach them. But puppies, especially, have not learned to pick up on little cues from your voice or mannerisms, so don't get frustrated or upset if your puppy is not responding as you would like. Puppy training must begin the very first day.
As you teach your puppy, make sure that you understand the value of good puppy obedience training. A well mannered dog is a joy to live with. Manners can be taught from the very first day you bring your puppy home. Simply start with what is acceptable to you, and what is not. Dogs of all ages have very short memories – when you are house training your puppy, for example, and your puppy has an accident inside your house while you are not looking, grabbing your little dog and shoving its nose in the poop will not teach it not to poop indoors. Chances are your dog has already forgotten that it pooped, and all you are doing is making it afraid of the smell that you have shoved in its face. Puppies that are improperly punished can grow up poorly trained and neurotic (in the poop example, these dogs are often found hiding their poop or eating it to hide the evidence so that you do not punish them). The more puppy education, the better. Studies have shown that dogs trained at a young age grow up to be more intelligent than other dogs. But even without that truth, a well trained puppy is far more likely to grow up to be a well trained adult dog. Start young. Part of puppy training involves socialization. You need to get your dog used to other dogs, strangers, family members and pets at a very early age. Many bad behaviors are the result of not being properly socialized to strange things, and the earlier you start, the better. Puppy education is a long and fun process that involves careful actions and a little bit of patience. But it will help you bond to your dog for life, as well as help you raise a well behaved and intelligent animal.
