How To Train Your Dog To Stand On Command
After you have taught your dog to sit and lay down, the next logical step in your dog’s obedience training is to teach your dog to stand. The “Stand” command has a variety of benefits. It makes it easier to brush your dog’s underbelly, it helps you train your dog on some of the more complicated tricks, and it is simply a good command to have at your disposal. There are two ways to train your dog to stand on command. These methods are:
How to Lead Your Dog Up Once
your dog is in the lay down position, put the treat in front of their
nose, say “Stand,” and start raising your hand upwards. As you do so,
your dog will follow the treat back upwards. Should you find that your
dog sits up instead of stands up, encourage standing by gently pushing
your dog’s underbelly until they stand before you feed them the treat
and offer a lot of praise.
How to Encourage Your Dog to Stand Some people prefer to take the more hands on approach for the “Stand” command. In these cases, the idea is to gently slide your hand under the belly of your dog when they are lying down, and as soon as you see your pet moving, say “Stand.” After they have stood, shower them with praise. However, you should also practice the same technique from the sit position as well. You want your dog to know that standing is not just something they do when they are laying down, but something they should do whenever you say the command, no matter what they are doing. By teaching your dog in both the lying down and stand position, your dog should quickly pick up on the command. Whichever technique you use, make sure you practice that technique often. Stand is one of those few tricks that may take a few extra tries before your dog has completely mastered it, but once they do it will be a trick they will continue to do for a long while. Training
